The Uttarakhand government officially announced the Char Dham Yatra 2026 opening dates through the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee. All four shrines open in spring once the winter snowpack recedes enough for safe passage. Pilgrims are advised to book accommodation and travel at least 6–8 weeks before opening day to avoid shortages.
Mandatory Char Dham Yatra registration was introduced to manage pilgrim flow and ensure safety at high-altitude shrines. The process takes under 10 minutes on all official channels. Registration can be completed online, on the dedicated mobile app, or via WhatsApp — no agent or payment is required.
Helicopter services dramatically cut the trek to Kedarnath from 16–18 km to a 7-minute flight, making the pilgrimage accessible for elderly pilgrims and those with limited mobility. Three certified helipads — Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi — operate daily during the season. Always book through the official IRCTC or Uttarakhand Tourism portal to avoid fraudulent operators.
The Char Dham Yatra season runs from April to November, but peak conditions vary by month. May–June offers clear skies and moderate temperatures before the monsoon arrives; September–October brings post-monsoon greenery with much thinner crowds. Avoid mid-July to late August — heavy rainfall triggers landslides that can close the NH-58 and NH-94 corridors for days.
Packing smart is critical for a pilgrimage that spans elevations from 600 m at Haridwar to 3,583 m at Kedarnath. Lightweight thermal layers, a waterproof shell, and non-slip trekking shoes form the non-negotiable core of every pack. Carry your printed Yatra Registration Certificate, a photo ID, and a basic first-aid kit including altitude-sickness tablets prescribed by your doctor.
Kedarnath at 3,583 m and Badrinath at 3,133 m are altitudes where Acute Mountain Sickness can affect even fit pilgrims. Begin cardiovascular preparation 6–8 weeks before departure and consult your doctor about Acetazolamide prophylaxis. Pilgrims with heart conditions, hypertension, or respiratory illness must carry a medical fitness certificate and inform their guides.
