Yatra Guide 2026

Your Complete Yatra Guide

Everything you need to plan your sacred Char Dham pilgrimage — from Haridwar to Badrinath and back.

Standard Itinerary

A complete Char Dham Yatra typically takes 11-12 days starting from Haridwar/Rishikesh. It follows a clockwise direction: Yamunotri — Gangotri — Kedarnath — Badrinath.

How to Reach

Start at Haridwar (Train) or Dehradun (Air). From there, proceed via road. Helicopter services are highly recommended for Kedarnath to save time and physical exertion.

Health Precautions

Due to high altitudes, undergo a basic medical checkup before traveling. Carry warm layers, prescribed medications, and stay hydrated to prevent altitude sickness.

How to Reach the Char Dhams

Multiple travel modes to suit every pilgrim — road, helicopter, train, and air.

By Road

The most common mode. From Haridwar/Rishikesh, well-maintained National Highways connect all four Dhams. Volvo buses from Delhi ISBT reach Haridwar in 5-6 hours. Private taxis and shared jeeps are widely available.

By Helicopter

Highly recommended for Kedarnath. Helicopter services operate from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi helipads. The flight takes just 8-10 minutes versus a grueling 18-21 km trek. Advance booking is strongly advised.

By Train

The nearest major railway stations are Haridwar and Rishikesh, well connected to Delhi, Mumbai, and most major Indian cities. Haridwar is approximately 4-5 hours from Delhi by express train.

By Air

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun — approximately 1 hour flight from Delhi. From Dehradun, road access to Haridwar or Rishikesh takes 1-1.5 hours.

Starting Point: Haridwar or Rishikesh

All Char Dham Yatra itineraries begin from Haridwar or Rishikesh. These towns serve as the spiritual gateway to the Himalayas. Yatra registration checkpoints and medical screening camps are available at both cities. A Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar is a deeply moving way to begin and conclude your Yatra.

Best Time to Visit & Travel Tips

Plan your Yatra in the right season and prepare yourself for the journey ahead.

Seasonal Guide

May – June (Ideal)

Pleasant temperatures, clear skies, and the first rush of pilgrims after the temples open on Akshaya Tritiya. The best overall window for the Yatra.

July – August (Avoid)

Heavy monsoon rainfall leads to frequent landslides, road closures, and difficult trekking conditions. Travel is strongly discouraged during this period.

September – October (Excellent)

Post-monsoon season brings crystal-clear mountain views, cooler temperatures, and significantly fewer crowds. One of the best windows for a peaceful Yatra.

November (Closing Season)

Temples close after Diwali (Bhai Dooj). Weather turns extremely cold and routes can become inaccessible due to early snowfall.

Essential Travel Tips

  • 01. Complete your government Yatra Registration and carry your YRC certificate at all times — it is mandatory at all checkposts.
  • 02. Book helicopter services well in advance — they sell out quickly, especially for May and October.
  • 03. Pack essential medicines including altitude sickness tablets (Diamox), ORS packets, pain relievers, and any personal prescriptions.
  • 04. Carry warm layers regardless of the season — temperatures at Kedarnath (3,583 m) and Badrinath (3,133 m) can drop sharply even in summer.
  • 05. A medical fitness checkup is strongly recommended for senior citizens, those with heart conditions, and individuals with respiratory issues.
  • 06. Keep photocopies of all ID proofs, your YRC, and emergency contact numbers readily accessible.
  • 07. Stay hydrated and acclimatize gradually — do not rush the journey. Rest stops at lower altitudes help your body adjust before ascending.
