Everything you need to plan your sacred Char Dham pilgrimage — from Haridwar to Badrinath and back.
A complete Char Dham Yatra typically takes 11-12 days starting from Haridwar/Rishikesh. It follows a clockwise direction: Yamunotri — Gangotri — Kedarnath — Badrinath.
Start at Haridwar (Train) or Dehradun (Air). From there, proceed via road. Helicopter services are highly recommended for Kedarnath to save time and physical exertion.
Due to high altitudes, undergo a basic medical checkup before traveling. Carry warm layers, prescribed medications, and stay hydrated to prevent altitude sickness.
A carefully planned route from Haridwar, following the traditional clockwise sequence of the four sacred shrines.

The most common mode. From Haridwar/Rishikesh, well-maintained National Highways connect all four Dhams. Volvo buses from Delhi ISBT reach Haridwar in 5-6 hours. Private taxis and shared jeeps are widely available.
Highly recommended for Kedarnath. Helicopter services operate from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi helipads. The flight takes just 8-10 minutes versus a grueling 18-21 km trek. Advance booking is strongly advised.
The nearest major railway stations are Haridwar and Rishikesh, well connected to Delhi, Mumbai, and most major Indian cities. Haridwar is approximately 4-5 hours from Delhi by express train.
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun — approximately 1 hour flight from Delhi. From Dehradun, road access to Haridwar or Rishikesh takes 1-1.5 hours.
All Char Dham Yatra itineraries begin from Haridwar or Rishikesh. These towns serve as the spiritual gateway to the Himalayas. Yatra registration checkpoints and medical screening camps are available at both cities. A Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar is a deeply moving way to begin and conclude your Yatra.
Plan your Yatra in the right season and prepare yourself for the journey ahead.
May – June (Ideal)
Pleasant temperatures, clear skies, and the first rush of pilgrims after the temples open on Akshaya Tritiya. The best overall window for the Yatra.
July – August (Avoid)
Heavy monsoon rainfall leads to frequent landslides, road closures, and difficult trekking conditions. Travel is strongly discouraged during this period.
September – October (Excellent)
Post-monsoon season brings crystal-clear mountain views, cooler temperatures, and significantly fewer crowds. One of the best windows for a peaceful Yatra.
November (Closing Season)
Temples close after Diwali (Bhai Dooj). Weather turns extremely cold and routes can become inaccessible due to early snowfall.
