Weather Safety Tips for Pilgrims

Be prepared for the unpredictable Himalayan climate.

Before You Set Out Each Day

  • 01. Always check the live weather before starting a trek or driving on mountain roads. Conditions can change within hours.
  • 02. If heavy rainfall or snowfall is forecast, delay your trek and wait for conditions to improve. No darshan is worth risking safety.
  • 03. Start treks and drives early in the morning — afternoon weather in the Himalayas is frequently worse than mornings.
  • 04. Carry a rain poncho at all times, even on clear days. Sudden rain is common at high altitudes.

Essential Cold-Weather Gear

  • 01. Thermal inner layers — essential even in May and June at Kedarnath and Yamunotri where nights can drop below 0°C.
  • 02. A wind-resistant and waterproof outer jacket. Down jackets are recommended for Kedarnath and Badrinath after sunset.
  • 03. Woolen socks, gloves, and a cap or beanie. Extremities are most vulnerable to cold at high altitude.
  • 04. Sunscreen (SPF 50+) and UV-protective sunglasses — UV radiation is significantly stronger at high altitudes.
